Fans of Pride and Prejudice will probably find this a bit of a stretch. Although it is easy to believe that Lydia and Mr Wickham came to bad ends, which they deserved, I found some of the adventures that Lydia got herself tangled up in simply unbelievable. In P&P, Lydia was simply foolish but in this book she is downright stupid at times and it made her unlikeable and annoying but I have never been a fan of books that portray women this way. She never learns from any of her mistakes and it makes the story quite predictable after just a few chapters. I will give kudos to the author for attempting to portray the seedier side of Georgian society which she did quite well.Tags : The Bad Miss Bennet: A Novel (Pride and Prejudice) [Jean Burnett] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Picking up where Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice left off, The Bad Miss Bennet takes readers on a wild Regency romp with Lydia Wickham,Jean Burnett,The Bad Miss Bennet: A Novel (Pride and Prejudice),Pegasus Books,1605983721,Historical,Literary,Domestic fiction.,Historical fiction,Love stories,Mate selection,Mate selection;Fiction.,Regency fiction,Widows,Widows;Fiction.,FICTION General,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,FICTION Romance Historical Regency,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction Historical,FictionHistorical - General,FictionLiterary,FictionRomance - Historical - General,Historical - General,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945),Romance - Historical - General,Romance - Historical - Regency
The Bad Miss Bennet A Novel Pride and Prejudice Jean Burnett 9781605983721 Books Reviews
having a hard time finishing, reads like a trashy romance novel, to get nine more words will repeat, won't go there again
Lydia (again) is up to her antics. The ending begs for a sequel as it leaves it up in the air as to what happens next. Hope there is a sequel.
I loved the book, but what happens in. Brazil?does jerry get a job in the royal household! Does our heroin ever get remarried?
I usually hate Jane Austen rip-offs and sequels. I read a couple when I was younger and found them shallow and trite. It's sort of presumptious to try to write a sequel of a master, but I can understand a writer wanting to live in that world for a while. I'm not sure what attracted me to this, but I read the sample and was interested enough to follow through. Not great literature, but flat out fun. She's a bad Miss Bennett, not exactly someone you entirely sympathize with, but can't help want to follow around as she gets in trouble. It hooked me enough to make me look at a few other samples for Pride and Prejudice sequels and yes. The rest of them really are still bad.
After Wickham's death, Lydia Bennet struggles to maintain her place in society. Her lack of moral compass leads her astray.
I had had no idea that pride and prejudice had acted like its own little microcosm of humanity! developing itself into dozens of extremely lesser novels written by people who must have felt it would be easy and glamorous to write like Jane Austen. I really wished they had tried for the easy glamor of running an 18th century sewage plant; the experience would have been instructive for them and significantly less painful for us, the innocent Readers. This novel, and it's not even the worst of the bunch, finds Mrs. Lydia wick ham! née Bennet, widowed in the battle of Waterloo and determined to establish herself as a rollicking anti-heroine, despite the fact that if she moves on this way she is almost certain to run into Becky Sharpe. The characters are both confusingly contradictory and one-dimensional, which is quite a feat in anyone's ballroom, and the plot is like a dense slab of flavorless, undifferentiated cheese. Recommended for reading to your elderly and addled employer if you happen to be a deceitful companion who wishes to inherit the family manse sooner rather than later.
Oh I have read 20 or so additional versioned endings to P&P as it is the story that is always welcome but the writer in this one went too far off with Darcy cruel in his castoff of his sister. Lydia's story, in the end, was far too true about what some in real life believe as their entitlements without honest work and getting rewards from stealing and cheating for it with minimal or no consequence. I abhor anything that believes that stealing and cheating through life and other people's loss is acceptable and allows true rewards for it and an ending that indicates it will continue happily ever after.
Fans of Pride and Prejudice will probably find this a bit of a stretch. Although it is easy to believe that Lydia and Mr Wickham came to bad ends, which they deserved, I found some of the adventures that Lydia got herself tangled up in simply unbelievable.
