Clementine's Shadow was a little slow to get started for me. But, once it started...I literally did not put the book down until I had finished it.Each of the characters, no matter how small a role, is well filled out and believable. The story line is smooth and easy to follow. There are twists galore in the plot, and you don't know who the bad guy is until he is revealed...but, even then, the story doesn't end. One more twist before we all go home...
While this is an excellent who-dun-it, I especially enjoyed the character growth. People simply cannot go through these situstions, the crucibles of life, and come out unchanged. The fun part of this book was watching those changes take place, both formthe good, and for the not so good!
I was very impressed with Ms. Rothschild's writing, and hope to read more!

Interesting and complex characters. You end up liking them watching them grow and hoping it all ends well for them.
For self-exiled cop, Casey Lang, Ardon is a dull change the social and crime of L.A. If Casey had assumed that moving to the desert town would help her overcome the numbing fear of shooting another child on duty, she is in for a nasty service. After a slow start as a deputy, the kidnapping of a six-year child from a music concert at the town park sees her graduate from a trigger shy cop to the courageous and daring one of old.
Deputy Lang doesn't have to slog it out alone. Despite a figurehead sheriff throwing wrenches her way, she finds eager helpers among the locals. These include Brady, the rich artist; Winston, the distraught father; and Earl and Jane, two kids with issues of their own. As Lang and the other deputies work on the case, they unearth details of an older, unsolved murder. The stakes are now high and finding Tiny or Brittany becomes a matter of life and death.
Clementine's Shadow is a classic mystery novel with a slow start and a plethora of characters. The reader is introduced to the important characters, including the kidnapper, through separate chapters. As the story progresses, the lives and secrets of each person is peeled off layer by layer. While a couple of folks from Ardon are deemed suspicious, you are never surely sure of their motives or their actual involvement.
The book is a reminder of the stark reality of child abductions and subsequent brutality. The mystery is well maintained and the narration finds you on the edge of your seats, as plot hurtles its way to the climax. I liked the use of colorful words and enjoyed the believable banter.
The average reader may get impatient with the tedious beginning but persistence is rewarded in the form of engaging story. Somehow, this book reminded of the Northern Lights by Nora Roberts although the plot line is entirely different.
I am not interested in reading authors that feel the need to use foul language in their writing. I do appreciate finding that out early on before I wasted too much time reading this.
This book was a good mystery. It keeps you questioning.... who? What?
Suprise ending after all is said and done.
This book was hard to put down once I started reading it. In fact, my only complaint was that while I really got involved in and liked the story I didn't like the writing style. It was why I gave it only 4 stars.
This is a wonderful novel. On one level it's a first-rate mystery/thriller that takes place over the course of one night about the search for a small child who is abducted by a killer.
Casey Lang has fled her job as a cop with the LAPD after a traumatic experience. She hopes to live a calmer life as a deputy sheriff in the small California desert town of Ardon.
But once there she finds herself relegated to traffic duty and other boring jobs by her boss, a pencil pusher who has no real policing background and is threatened by her greater experience. So she has to tread carefully when her fellow officers look to her to take the lead in finding six year old Brittany Reid when the girl vanishes in the middle of a local fair.
During the search, old town secrets come to light and she learns that nobody is who she thought they were. With time running out for the little girl Casey must strike out on her own, follow clues no one wanted her to find, and face down a particulary nasty and dangerous pedophile. And even after that violent confrontation, the town has one final secret to reveal to her--a surprise twist that reveals a legacy of evil hidden behind years of polite façade.
But this novel is much more than just the gripping story. It chronicles one night in the lives of a rich cast of eccentric small town characters--fully drawn with all their faults and unexpected courage. The writer shows how everyone involved in the search for the little girl is ultimately changed by their encounter and that their lives can never be the same after facing such evil.
Can't wait to read more from Ms. Rothschild
Just moving to Ardon, California, Deputy Casey Lang has been through a really hard situation that no one should ever have to deal with. Now suffering from PTSD she is in search of a new beginning and takes on a case where she must find a six-year old child who has disappeared. While this is not the first case she would have preferred she has a lot of experience in kidnapping cases and knows she is the best person for the job. This book really hits home for me because I can’t begin to imagine the terror of my child going missing and I am so happy that there are people out there like Casey Lang (albeit fictional) who are so good at their job.
