I listened to the first book on Audible and my interest was piqued. I had to know what happened about the missing sister. This book is about the brother to the H in book 1. His name is Jack and he has just opened a gambling club for gentleman. The h is a teacher at a school for girls and when the school burns down, she is tasked with bringing one of the girls to her family. Unfortunately, the girls grandmother has gone into a home because she has dementia, the solicitor advises that no money has been allocated to the young girl. Clutching at straws, the solicitor suggests that the H should be the girl's ward. The H employs the h to be the girl's governess (after a few chapters of to-ing and fro-ing). There is a little bit about the search for the H's missing sister but not enough. I felt that this was a filler book and that I need to read the third to find out what happens.

Jack of Clubs The House of Cards Trilogy Book 2 Barbara Metzger 9780451218056 Books Reviews

The book is lighthearted and a slightly humorous regency.

Although the writing and storyline had me reminiscing about the kind of books that I would have found very interesting when I was in middle school, I still enjoyed the lightness of it.

No strong plot, most of the storyline was dealing with the reputation of a gentle bred woman and her relationship with a debaucher.

Don't expect any hidden secrets or dark past.

There were neither intriguing aspects in the novel nor emotional palpitations to make you not want to put the book down. As a matter of fact it was needlessly easy for me to skim through pages at a time because the same thoughts were repeated over and over again from chapter to chapter. I didn't know how many times or in how many ways one could lament about a soiled reputation.

All in all, because I have enjoyed Ms Metzger's work in the past and I'm a little partial to her I'll rate this book 3 stars. I'm also in no hurry nor do I care to read about the lost Endicott Sister in the last book of the trilogy. But since I do own the book in my library, hopefully when I have no other choice I just might oblige myself.
Many an artistic endeavor has failed because of a poor middle. I have read all of The House Of Cards Trilogy and all of the books have been a fun read. Jack of Clubs is the middle and it was as much fun as the other two books. I love the author's sense of humor and the Jack of Clubs was full of humor, with love in bloom all over the place. The secondary characters are a delight. The author has a wonderful gift of including realistic, less than perfect children and animals in her books. I am glad Harriet is at Jack's instead of my house, but the hound lives with me. Poor Jack, bless his heart, can't seem to get things to go his way but comes out okay in the end. All of his fine plans keep falling apart until in the end he has exactly what he needs. I am glad to see him have a small part in the third book and that he was behaving just as I had hoped he would.
Allie, the rigidly respectable teacher; Jack, the younger son, ex-soldier and owner of a gaming house; eight-year-old orphan and terror Harriet the plot twists and slowly spins. A minor thread Jack's continuing search for his young sister, kidnapped 13 years ago. Entertaining, not enthralling.
Metzger does it again! I couldn't put it down. It's filled with surprises, humorous, mystery and a love story filled with many obstacles but also desire and romance. Jack is a great continuance of book one, Ace.

Jack has come home from the war and though he loves Ace and his bride, he wants to set off on his own. He wants to support himself instead of living off of Ace and he wants to look for their long missing sister, Lottie. So he moves to Mayfair, opens a respectable gaming hall, putting up posters with what Lottie would look like now with a large reward. He interviews all of the women questioning them himself with very specific questions in case Lottie, who was only three when she went missing, should show up one day.

Since Lottie was a blond who could be a twin to Aces New wife, (Lotties cousin) as well as her mother, who died the night Lottie went missing, Jack questions all blond hair, blue eyed women but refusing to hire anyone with blond hair to work in the club. This all becomes discouraging and chaotic enough but he had no clue of the whirlwind coming into his life until one day, a very proper and stiff young woman shows up with a child in tow!

To Jacks dismay, he's been named the guardian of a little red headed, mischievous girl by an old friend who died during the war! Now he's really got trouble on his hands, juggling his club, a little girl whom trouble follows and a very broke, proper lady, desperate to move on and find work as a teacher ( since the school where she worked and Harriet attended burnt down) and Allison is now on her own broke, no extra clothing and nowhere to live. She must find a job after delivering Harriet!

Harriet doesn't want to be left by Allie though and Jack knows nothing of little girls. He also has to run his club! AfterHarriet cries and Jack bribes, he convinces Allie to stay temporarily until things can be worked out. Mysteries begin, danger, desire develops and troubles Jack would never have imagined invades his life. It's a wonderfully , delightful, captivating story I'd recommend to anyone who likes non stop entertainment and romance filled with delightful surprises! A book not easily forgotten!!!
I loved the first book in this miniseries. I think this one is even better. The heart, the joy, the humor lifts Metzger stories to levels above the typical historical romance. They are terrific fun to read. Harriet steals the show here and although she is 8 yrs old, I would dearly love to find out how she handles adulthood. Does she become the first female doctor, Prime Minister, bank robber, world explorer.......? That is a story crying out to be told. My guess is that she will become a veterinarian by day and run a gambling den by night. Please let your fans know.
